The latest Martin Scorsese film to hit cinemas, the highly-anticipated Shutter Island brings the American psychodramatic horror genre to new levels. Highly influenced by the visual style of German Expressionism and film noir (Scorsese cites The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari as a major influence in making this piece), this film is a masterful combination of mood-enhancing music, vivid and inspired cinematography, harsh lighting, and a plot that will keep you guessing way after the movie has ended. This is one piece way up there joining the ranks of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut.
