Movies in 2010 - summary of a year's worth of good and bad movies

To be honest, I wasn’t exactly too excited by the movie offerings in 2010.  Hollywood was getting a little too formulaic for my taste. The typical movie year goes something like this:

1)      You have the Marvel comics superhero movie or the Marvel comics superhero sequel (Ironman 2)

2)      You have the Narnia and Harry Potter movies

3)      The rom-com starring every possibly famous person on earth (Valentine’s Day)

4)      The Adam Sandler or Ben Stiller festive movies (people REALLY like to make jokes about human anatomy during the festive season, don’t they?)

5)      The mandatory Johnny Depp movie where he acts like a weirdo for the 10057th time (Alice in Wonderland)

… and so on. In my humble opinion, it’s just pitifully predictable.

Still, I’ve decided to put together a list of random thoughts about the movies of 2010. But should you get upset about anything in this article, let it be known that this list is a personal one. I don’t claim to be Roger Ebert or anyone. Trust me, you don’t want to get too serious about a best movie list written by someone who regards Jurassic Park as the best movie of ALL TIME. (Samuel L. Jackson as a dinosaur scientist? Too rad!) Also, I’m not going to tell you what the hell Inception is about exactly (even though I DO know what it is about).

So if you really do get upset, remember, it’s not you, it’s me.

(1)   It’s all about the sidekicks.

movies in 2010

Remember after Harry Potter, suddenly every other Hollywood movie had an awesome British supporting cast ? (Helen Mirren in State of Play, Bill Nighy in Pirates of the Caribean and finishing off with Russell Brand in Forgeting Sarah Marshall etc). There’s just something in their genes that makes them so fantastic in a supporting role, but this year the other ethnicities have risen to the occasion to snatch over the title of Best At Being Second In Limelight.

For example, The Town was one of the movies I did kind of enjoyed last year. Although Ben Affleck’s got the “I look macho killing gangstas and robbing banks and all, but deep inside I’m crying like a 16 year old girl” persona down pat, it’s really the electrifying supporting cast like Jeremy Renner and Rebecca Hall who stole the limelight.

Similarly, Inception wouldn’t have been as great a film without Joseph Gordon Levitt (he was really intense in that movie you know, sucking his cheeks in all the time. I love that guy and I wish that there were a separate section just for him in this article but… Oh wait, there IS).

Ensemble casting is awesome, and the more nationalities there are involved, the better (have you not seen Inglorious Basterds?). I have a feeling that if they made the story of the UN into a movie it will be a blast and totally not boring at all. (Obviously I’m joking about this one). - Next page
