For his contributions to culture, Dr Seet was conferred a Special Recognition Award by MICA in 2005. As a media personality, Dr Seet hosted Film Art on Arts Central Television, and was the ubiquitous Cocktail Critic with a perennial glass of Singapore Sling in his hand in the final season of Art Nation on Singapore TV 12. He later served as resident judge for both seasons of Mediacorp’s prime time debate show, The Arena, which was subsequently nominated for an International Emmy Award. Apart from sitting on many boards and committees involving the arts and advising on multidisciplinary arts at the National Arts Council, Dr Seet has served as chief judge for many high profile competitions including Theatre Idol, the Singapore Literature Prize, the Singapore Dramatist Awards, the Fame Awards and the Straits Times Life Theatre Awards, for this last of which he enjoys the honor of being the longest-standing judge and was named Best Dressed Personality at the Life Theatre Awards in 2010. For being effectively bilingual and one of the earliest winners of the Prime Minister’s Book Prize for bilingualism, Dr Seet has served as the spokesman of the Huayu Cool campaign and had his face plastered on the side of double-decker buses and on Zo cards. His big portrait was also featured in the shop-window of the luxury fountain pen shop, Elephant and Coral in Wheelock Place, next to the slogan: “Good writing ages like vintage wine: Dr KK Seet with his Chateau Lafite-Rothschild fountain pen”. He has also hosted an internet talk-show entitled “An Audience with Dr Seet”, still available on Youtube, and a painting he personally drew and donated to the Association of Singapore Actors for its fund-raising drive was the first to be auctioned. The piece, executed in children’s crayons, was sold for $2000. For a spell, Dr Seet had his own teeshirt line named “truisms” , retailed exclusively by Instant Karma boutique at The Heeren. Dr Seet has made cameos in two Mediacorp TV movies, as well as in the American-made documentary, Hungry Ghosts, the Fann Wong/Christopher Lee vehicle, Wedding Game and will appear in Wee Li Lin’s forthcoming, MDA-funded feature film, Forever. A distinctive note is that Dr Seet always appears as Himself in all these movie cameos. Dr Seet’s previous books include the short fiction collection Death Rites, twice filmed for television under the respective series, AlterAsians and the Singapore Short Story Project: from Print to Screen; Made in Singapore, a humorous compendium of Singapore caricatures which was a bestselling phenomenon in the 1980s, with a special edition issued for the erstwhile Boulevard Hotel which distributed a copy to every hotel guest; Singapore Celebrates, published in conjunction with the nation’s 25th birthday and buried in a time capsule outside Empress Place; In Unison, a commemorative tome on the Suzhou-Singapore Industrial Park which the Minister Mentor presented to the Vice Premier of China; Knowledge, Imagination, Possibility: Singapore’s Transformative Library which was launched at the 2005 opening of the new National Library building; and last but not least, The Istana, commissioned by the President of the Republic of Singapore and presented to visiting heads of state.
