I’ve heard too many people complaining about the brood of pampered young Singaporeans. They’re self-centred, have high spending power (thanks to the fat allowance daddy gives) and take everything for granted.
I’m sure you’ve heard it before too.
And as if we need some photographic evidence to those complaints, this picture was seen circulating on Facebook, creating much buzz.
It appears that nobody has any clue to who the protagonist of this picture story is (thank God, or he might join the league of hotly-criticised people like Peter Coffin or Samantha from Holland V.)
While it’s true that I’ve met Singaporean men who whine too much, are afraid of working hard enough and are a little too pampered, let me stand up for the rest of the Singaporean population by saying that most Singaporean men (at least those that I know), however, are a pleasant bunch!
Several Singaporean men I know of practises chivalry, work hard for their dreams and believe its their responsibility to take care of their family. And I’m sure they will certainly frown at this widely-circulated picture.
I believe in some kind of a “natural selection” process in life. Someone who has the right disposition – man or woman – tends to be able to do better in life. Those who are more willing to work hard are more likely to do better in their careers than those who aren’t; those who are more caring towards the people around them get more sincere friends; and those who prioritise their family enjoy a happier family life. So, if you fall into the I-need-my-maid-to-do-everything-for-me category, time to rethink that!
Anyway, we thought it’ll be fun to do up some captions for this picture (it’s too tempting to pass this by!) We’ve already done ours (in the picture) so it’s time we hear from you!
Register for an 8flo account (on top right corner of this page), and leave your caption in the comment box below. We’ll pick two best answers and award them with a Limited Edition Crabtree & Evelyn Summer Hill Scented Soap worth $10 each. Contest is opened to all Singapore residents and closes on 3 April 2011.

Our men belong to the army so leave the bags to the nanny!
Wow, am surprise the maid wasn’t holding him by the hand also; it looks almost as if the boy is on his way to a daycare centre instead of a military camp
“i get trained in ns and then i train my maid when i’m back. just applying what i’ve learnt~”
It’s ain’t heavy,he’s my mdm’s son’s bag!
OUR HOME
OUR SINGAPORE
OUR MAIDS
45 years of interdependence.
Ready, relevant, decisive.
My maid, Our Army
Singapore, she’s got my bag, I’ve got your back.
There are some who think that perhaps this image was taken out of context… what do you guys think? Is it possible that he is really injured? or maybe it’s not his bag? Could this be a posed photo? Stranger things have been seen before after all…
Even with the benefit of the doubt, it still looks terrible. The fact that Singapore has a conscript army just makes the problem more obvious – we don’t have REAL soldiers… which makes me think of a quote!
“Army @ 21! A career that demands respect”
I think the maid is a Gurkha, and that guy is obviously her commanding officer lah!
*sarcasm sign*
