Move over, Nicole Seah, there’s another personality who became an overnight online sensation and looks set to achieve more Facebook fans than the 24-year-old electoral candidate. He’s not one of the candidates running for the elections, but the election’s Returning Officer, Yam Ah Mee.

The 53-year-old is the chief executive director of People’s Association and he became an overnight online celebrity because of his straight face and monotonous annoucement of the General Elections results. The lines that he had been repeating “Persuant to Section 49, sub-section 7E, paragraph A of the Parliamentary Election Act, I declare ______ of ______ party as the candidate(s) elected” also became a “pet sentence”. In fact, everyone loves it so much, we saw a picture of T-shirts carrying the line.

Another enterprising individual also manufactured and is selling Yam Ah Mee-related merchandise on Facebook. The mechandise include iPhone covers, mugs, badges and shirts.

There are currently 18 Facebook fan pages for Yam Ah Mee, with a total number of more than 56,000 fans in less than two days. Some of these fan pages were set up while he was doing his duty as Returning Officer on national TV – that means he’d probably be in for a shock when he got home!

Netizens called him “Justice Bao” and “Robocop” because of his serious expression and impartial tone used (which he should) when reading the results of the General Elections. Many also commented that he looks like Andy Lau from certain angle. Netizens are now encouraging Yam Ah Mee to run for President.
