Foods that relieve stress

Stress causes our body and mind to crave for easy-to-reach foods, often of low nutritional value. When the going gets tough, the stressed-out hunts for comfort food. Avoid caffeine as it raises hormones and triggers anxiety. High-sugar content in trans-fatty acids and alcohol cause spikes in blood sugar levels and increases stress to your heart.

Take charge of your diet and bust stress with 8 GR8 stress relieving foods:

1) Fortified Cereals

Cereals are not just for the kiddies! They are packed with wholesome benefits from essential vitamins and minerals that are necessary for adults too. Cereal is an excellent source of stress-fighters such as Vitamin Bs and C, Fibre and Folic Acid. Also, they keep you fuller for longer so you won’t start craving high-salt/high-sugar snacks.

Try: Post’s Banana Nut Crunch Cereal – with real bananas baked into multigrain clusters, multigrain flakes and walnuts – a real treat to kick-start the day!

2) Fish
Swimming with B-vitamins, Vitamin-B12 is essential in the production of serotonin aka “happy” hormones. Coupled with nature’s numero uno stress reducer, Omega-3, we can feel those anxieties slipping away already!

Try: Enjoy Joe & Dough’s Tuna, Dill and Capers multigrain sandwich for yummy B-vitamins.

3) Wholegrain Pasta or Rice
Carbs have a bad rep. Often touted as comfort food, most weight-watchers avoid them. Wholegrains are the “good guys” that help reduce stress.

Try: Thunder Tea Rice (available at Food Republic) is loaded with veggies, beancurd, peanuts, anchovies and brown rice, which are highly nutritious.

4) Milk
Milk builds strong bones and contains magnesium for relaxation. That explains why mum gets us to drink before bedtime. Another excuse to “Twist, lick and dunk” Oreo cookies – in moderation though.

Try: Meiji low-fat milk is a great partner for that breakfast cereal and a “sleep well” drink.
