Abbas 45 Years in Photography

The National Museum of Singapore will be showcasing Abbas, 45 Years in Photography, from 18 June to 18 September 2011, and it is the first ever compilation showing the development of his stunning works over the course of his career.

This will also mark the first time Abbas holds an exhibition in Asia, illustrating his perspectives and sentiments through over 130 distinctive black and white photographs and 4 audio visual clips.

Ms Lee Chor Lin, Director of the National Museum of Singapore, commented “Photography revolutionalised the way events are recorded since its proliferation in the second half of 19th century. It is a powerful tool for remembering, for not only images are captured, emotions and commotions too are scrutinised. A master of this art, Abbas brings to us 45 years of his preferred language in which he tells stories of war and conflict, of faith and disillusionment. This retrospective of Abbas’ photography is a momentous project for both the National Museum of Singapore and the photographer himself.”

When asked about his works, Abbas replied, “My photography is a reflection, which comes to life in action and leads to meditation. Spontaneity – the suspended moment – intervenes during action, in the viewfinder.” The dedicated photographer is most renowned for his iconic shots capturing dramatic and thought provoking scenes in times of social and political unrest.
