Cirque Eloize iD: Not your usual circus

I remember my first circus experience. My dad brought the family to one and I was thrilled as a little girl with performances such as gravity-defying acrobatic acts, breath-taking juggling and stunt bikers.

Cirque Eloize iD also offered the same repertoire. There were still acrobatic and contortionist performances, jugglers, and yes, a stunt biker. However, what’s difference about this performance held at Marina Bay Sands Grand Theater is that the presentation feels almost like a hip-hop and musical performance.

Every stunt – be it juggling, skipping, stunt biking and rollerblading – was presented along interesting “storylines”. A pair of forbidden lovers, an adventure at a construction site, two gangs meeting for a challenge, all set upon the background of the vibrant streets at the heart of a big city.

The music, all original and composed by Jean PhiGoncalves from indie band Beast and Alex McMahon, accompanying the performances give the production an edgy touch. You will probably find yourself bobbing to the rhythm of the music and the pulse of the stuntmen..

It is also commendable that the performance made use of evolving video projections to “change” the set, so the stage never looked boring for a second.

The performance received sold-out responses in Montreal and Toronto and is put together by 16 performers from seven different countries, bringing together 10 circus disciplines including in-line skating, stilts, Cyr wheel, hand balancing, Chinese pole and aerial silks.

The show will play from June 1 to June 26 at Marina Bay Sands Grand Theater. There are shows everyday except Tuesday, at 7.30pm, and on weekends, 1.30pm as well. You can get your tickets by visiting
