Dan Nainan provides Laughter, the best medicine

It’s not everyday that one gets to sit back, relax, and watch a daring man speak out loud irreverent jokes that touch on race, religion, politics, generation gaps and give anecdotes that indirectly make audience laugh at themselves. Dan Nainan managed to do just that with the utmost confidence and fluidity, inspiring non-stop raucous laughter from the audience for a good 45 mins or so.

His ability to hold the audience captive also plays on a medium to high level of interactivity between the audience. Get ready to answer a couple of questions if you happen to be sitting in the front rows of the stalls. Comedy clubs are intimate places of gathering, and experiencing the friendly Dan Nainan up-close will be an unforgettable experience. It’s the kind of show that you would want to drag your entire family down for, especially if you have Indian ancestry. Nainan’s jokes about his Indian migrant relatives are classic.

Nainan’s ability to mimic the different accents and political personalities such as George ‘Dubya’ Bush and American president Obama also provides for much hilarity.

I wouldn’t watch the video of Dan Nainan just below if I were you, because watching the jokes fresh and ‘live’ are a hundred times better, but oh well, if you must:

8flo Lifestyle also had the opportunity to interview Dan Nainan. Check out how he gets inspired to write his jokes, how he trains before a performance and which Singaporean politician he’d most like to perform for in the interview at this link.

The performance also featured a few other homegrown Comedy talents who sometimes take the stage of the Comedy Masala, Umar Rana (2nd runner up Hong Kong International Comedy Festival 2009) who hosted, and the young Jing Jinx and Rishi, making sure that there never was a dull moment. Just as how Dan Nainan remarked during the show that he used to play apprentice to Russell Peters, these comic talents seemed to follow the mold of Dan Nainan, practicing at the Open Mic Nights at Comedy Masala. Perhaps Singapore would one day produce her own Dan Nainan?

Dan Nainan will be performing at the DBS Arts Centre (SRT) on the 15 & 17 June 2011, 8pm.
Ticket price $52 (excluding Sistic booking fees)
