The terracotta army buried near the tomb of the First Emperor of China is perhaps the most important archaeological discovery of our time. Unearthed in 1974 outside Xi’an, the thousands of pottery soldiers and horses are striking works of art that tell us a great deal about early China.
This exhibition features one hundred artefacts from Shaanxi province in China, including ten life-size terracotta figures, bronzes and jades from the Qin state before the time of the First Emperor, as well as smaller burial objects from the Han dynasty. The ten terracotta figures, seen as magnificent works of art, over life-size, and each one bearing different facial features, hairstyles, outfit, armour and body position, are true wonders.
In addition to the terracotta warriors, other objects were found in the First Emperor’s tomb complex: real weapons; acrobats and musicians; chariots and birds made of bronze; and armour made of limestone. This appears to be a re-creation of the emperor’s court for his use in the afterlife. However, the exact meaning of the tomb remains uncertain. The discovery of the terracotta army completely changed our idea of early Chinese art. Formerly characterised as abstract and decorative, Chinese art could now be connected with realistic human images of great subtlety.
This is the first exhibition of the actual terracotta warriors to be held in Singapore, as well as the first presentation in Southeast Asia.
Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor and His Legacy is organised by the Asian Civilisations Museum, in partnership with the Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau and the Shaanxi Cultural Heritage Promotion Centre, People’s Republic of China.
