Dark Beauties - Guess their actual hair colour?

What do Nicole Kidman, Beyonce and Britney Spears have in common? They’re not natural blondes! When celebrities go blonde, it’s only a matter of course and we hardly think to bat an eyelid over it. What’s less common though, are the ladies who choose to go dark. In this month’s issue of transforming yourself and trying something new, 8flo takes a look at celebrities who chose to go to the dark side- and whether it worked for them or not.

Stars who rocked going Dark

1. Dita Von Teese

She has managed to make a living out of looking like a vintage pin up girl and from one signature martini glass-burlesque act. Let’s not forget, her vampish looks would hardly be as striking without her jet-black hair. Yes, she’s a natural blonde, and admits to using ‘box dye’ from the drugstore. Dita styles her own hair, and we say aye to that! Had she kept her original hair colour, she would have looked very demure and sweet, but Dita’s look relies on stark contrasting, which is why we think black works for her!

2. Scarlett Johansson

Well known for an ever changing array of hairstyles and hair colours in varying shades of blonde, Scarlett Johansson unveiled a new look on the covers of ‘Elle’ and ‘Vogue’ in 2009. The curvy star who usually spots a light blonde ‘do went brunette. A fine example of how going brunette can change one’s look and aura – as a blonde she gives off a very glamorous All-American star vibe, but her dark locks suggest a classic European look- more subdued but very mysterious.

3. Frances Bean Cobain

With a doll-like face and auburn hair, First (and only) child of grunge legend Kurt Cobain and rocker Courtney Love, Frances Bean Cobain had always been portrayed as a cute little child from a rock star family. That is, until Harper’s Bazaar unveiled a stunning photoshoot of her. The eccentric starling has certainly matured into a swan -at the tender age of 17, she went jet black and channeled an edgier dita von teese-like look with a maturity beyond her years. We think it makes her look like a modern porcelain sculpture.

Dark and down in the dumps!

4. Cameron Diaz

Well known for her outgoing, ditsy California-girl personality, Cameron Diaz dappled with dark hair at one time, in a bid to be taken more seriously. Sure, dark hair tends to bring out light coloured eyes better, as it did with ScarJo, but on Cameron she ended up looking old and foppish because it washed out her skin colour. Also, it doesn’t seem to match her sunny persona. Cameron and blonde should be synonymous, we’re glad she got out of black, but applaud her for the effort!

5. Lindsay Lohan

If Scarlett Johansson is known for her ever changing shades of blonde, Lindsay takes the cake by going from her natural red to blonde to brunette and back to blonde faster than you can say her name. No wonder, though! Black made her look like an old drag queen, or Michael Jackson’s protégée at least. It failed to do anything to illumine her skin and did nothing for her eyes either- not to mention she did not look at all like the fun-loving girl she is.

When it comes to black hair, not everyone can take it- it does depend on factors like one’s personality, look and skin tone.

Here’s a Style Tip: if black seems too harsh, go for brown/black mixes or darker browns, which are softer and come in greater shades to play with to suit one’s style and skin tone! More chestnuts or golden highlights if you’re the sunny sort, and a more dark cherry or walnut tone would exude a stronger and more serious personality.
