Feeling hungry this July? Fret not, for the annual Singapore Food Festival returns for the 18th year this July with more delicacies heading your way!
Beginning on the 15th of July and lasting 10 days, you will be treated to a symphony of tastes coupled with the sights of Singapore’s local heritage like never before. The theme of this year’s festival is “Curry and Spices”. Why this theme, you may ask. Mr Andrew Phua, Director of Precinct Development at the Singapore Tourism Board answers, “Curries and spices are the essences of our multi-ethnic cuisine, and over the years, these flavours combined into well-loved dishes that have evolved together with our society and culture.”
Spices and curries go far beyond their fragrant smells and delicious tastes to earn their places in our tummies. Cinnamon, star anise and five-spice powder are examples of common spices found in everyday local dishes but are you aware of the health benefits these spices have? Curry, contrary to popular understanding, does not refer to any particular dish but simply means a type of gravy or sauce. Each ethnic group has its own blend of spices resulting in the different texture, taste and smell of the curry. It is hoped that by participating in this year’s Singapore Food Festival, one can learn more about the heritage and innovation behind the creation of distinct flavours with spices.
Here are a few core events happening at SFF 2011:
Slated to be the longest and biggest Food Festival Village ever, this year’s Food Village situated along the Singapore River promises up to 60 different food stalls, doubling the number of stalls last year. Gastronomic local delicacies will be sold from an affordable price of $2 onwards and the Village closes at 11pm daily throughout the duration of the SFF. You will never go hungry this July!
If that is not enough to satisfy your taste buds, then check out the SFF Culinary Adventures made up of food trails that you can embark on, whether on water, on land or in the sky. The Tiffin Cruise promises an extraordinary experience of eating from a Tiffin carrier while cruising along the Singapore River, while the Trishaw Heritage Trail leads you on a cooking adventure as you gather the ingredients unique to your spice blend and have a Master Chef whip up a delicious lunch with it! Last but not least, if you love your food with fine tasting wines, take a ride on the Singapore Flyer to learn more about the nutritional value of canapés through the clever use of spices while enjoying the panoramic sunset view of the city.
The other highlight of this year’s SFF is the attempt to set a Guinness World Record with a 120m long single table where you will be able to dine at for just $100. You get to indulge in a buffet of Indian food with free flow chilled beer, wine and refreshments. Tickets for this festival finale is now on sale!
