On the 3 July, 8flo’s readers were given a complimentary basic course on photography and treated to a no-holds-barred photography walkabout, where they could practice their photography skills in the eclectic array of shops on Haji Lane. The photography clinic in the early afternoon taught them basics on DSLRs, such as which apertures, shutter speeds and focal lengths work best in different lighting or surroundings, how to play around with the depth of field of images, and why crop factors matter when it comes to choosing the right camera for the right job.
Shops that participated and hosted graciously in the walkabout included vintage fashion and stylish accessory shops, local designer wear, and even a bicycle shop.
Participants were amazed at the wonderful treasure trove that Haji Lane was and had fun shopping simultaneously while capturing beautiful images of objects both Big and Small for the follow-up photography competition “Beauty in all things Big & Small”. Fashion, accessories and hobbyist collectors’ items available in Haji Lane are mostly unique, one-of-a-kind pieces, thus the photographers enjoyed capturing them, alongside the beautifully repainted historic shophouses, forever in poetic photographs. Photographers also had much fun interacting and making new friends among themselves and with other photographers passing by in the historic district of Haji Lane. They learnt from each other’s expertise and experience as they set out in pairs and small groups to explore, at times seeking the 8flo trainer’s advice on how best to photograph an object based on the lighting conditions.
