Tips on Becoming a Social Butterfly

So you played it safe all your life. You followed all the rules, and you never mixed business with pleasure. They called you a late bloomer, and rightfully so, since you were comfortable just standing by the wall and watch everyone slow dance. But if you’re tired of hiding in the shadows, here are some tips to help you embrace your inner vixen and spread your butterfly wings. Stop missing out on meeting fabulous people and extend your social network starting with these simple steps.

1. Start at home. With popular social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Google circles, you can expand your social circle by connecting with new associates and re-connecting with old friends. Many unions and reunions have been forged with these tools, and they are a trendy way to mix the familiar with the unfamiliar. Do not rely solely on these sites however. The point of using them is to get you to be more comfortable with talking to others. The end-goal is to communicate and socialize with others in person.

2. If you receive an invitation to a party or get-together, then by all means, GO! People genuinely want to get to know you. Invitations are always a great opportunity to be seen. If you feel insecure, don’t be afraid to bring a close friend who’s a talker along to help break the ice.

3. Dress to impress. If you are normally shy, wear something that will do the talking for you. Play up your outfit with great shoes and accessories as these can be wonderful ice breakers or conversation starters. Be prepared for questions such as “Where did you get that cute handbag?” or be prepared to ask questions like these to other in order to start a conversation. You might want to jazz up your look every now and then, but make sure you are comfortable with the look, and still feel like yourself. Confidence can be smothered by wearing the wrong outfit!

4. Stay updated on current events. After the initial introductions are made, you need to keep the conversation going. If you can’t think of anything to comment about, at least try to engage the group by asking questions about their views. People tend to enjoy sharing their perspectives and you’ll get to learn more about the other person through the way they express themselves.

5. Smile, dance and volunteer. Simple actions at parties, such as offering to serve the drinks or lay the table will get people to notice you and be friendlier. People will also gravitate to you when they see that you are engaged in what you do and are willing to offer a helping hand.

6. Be gracious. Send Thank You SMSes to party hosts, or better still, reciprocate by offering to organize the next gathering. Above all, enjoy yourself!
