Food in Film presents: Le Grand Chef

The University Club proudly presents Le Grand Chef, the first Asian film in its Food in Film series, which brings together lovers of both food and film. This highly anticipated event will be held at The University Club on Thursday, 13 October 2011, and will see the film’s Korean cuisine come to life, as guests will be treated to uniquely mouth-watering delicacies specially prepared by chefs from The University Club. Not only will guests get to sample a range of Korean starters during the film screening, they can also enjoy a bespoke welcome cocktail.

Le Grand Chef, based on a popular comic book by Huh Young-man, tells the story of two fine Korean chefs competing for the title of Royal Chef. Both chefs display fine culinary skills as Korean fare is dexterously prepared and beautifully presented. The light-hearted movie provides comic relief as protagonist’s Seong-Chan and his ragtag crew face heaps of obstacles in their journey to culinary royalty.

The original comic series, Sik-gaek, has also had other successful spin-offs in the form of popular television series and a sequel to the movie.

Some of the culinary highlights of the night will include Yukkaejang, a spicy Korean stew which features as the final test of the chefs’ mastery in the film, as well as other Korean favorites Japchae (Stir-fry Glass Noodles), BiBimBap and Beef Bulgogi.

LE GRAND CHEF (2007)
Seong-Chan, a young and talented chef quits the profession after a contest to head a world-class
restaurant ends in tragedy. Retiring to a rural town with his grandfather, he finds a new and more
peaceful existence working as a farmer and selling vegetables at the local market. Content with
his new life, a nationwide cooking competition offers him the chance to take on his long-time
rival and he embarks on a journey that will lead him to the most startling revelations.
Surrounding himself with a ragtag crew of misfits, he is soon in the media spotlight, facing stiff
competition from the other contestants while dealing with his grandfather’s diminishing faculties
and a long buried family secret. Seong-Chan can only struggle to overcome every adversity with a
quiet dignity
