MetaSport is proud to announce the fifth edition of its annual sprint suite of races in 2012. Formerly known as the Tribob Singapore Sprint Series, the event has been renamed as the New Moon Khcycle MetaSprint Series – following a prior renaming exercise of Tribob to MetaSport in May 2011.
New Moon and KH Cycle have decidedly come onboard as title sponsors to promote the sports of Running, Cycling and Triathlon in pursuit of positive etiquettes that encompass the highest level of sportsmanship and sporting excellence.
The series made its debut in 2008 with 1,500 participants as a first of its kind race event, and has since continued to gain traction from a growing enthusiasm in Triathlon and endurance sports within Singapore. Its format has been unique in attracting both first-timers and Singapore’s best triathletes, who use it as an opportunity to hone their skills for longer races later in the season.
Unlike a full-fledged Triathlon, the three-race series is designed to convert recreational runners to multi-sport in an unintimidating manner, offering them a fresh challenge. It begins with an Aquathlon (swim and run) on 19 February, followed by a Duathlon (run and cycle) on 1 April, and gradually leads up to a sprint Triathlon (swim, cycle and run) on 6 May. The first race will feature at Sentosa, moving on to Sengkang in the second, finally concluding at Changi Beach Park. Those raring enough to take part in all three races will accumulate points after each leg, which will be used to determine the respective series’ champion of each age group. Series winners will take away this year outstanding prizes such as Gucci watches sponsored by Cortina Watch, top-of-the-range Mavic cycling shoes, 6-month subscription to the SPH magazine of their choice, and more.
For the sake of recreational runners, the races have been tuned to suit every level of fitness and skill, infused with an element of fun and excitement that delivers the health benefits of multi-sport. The race schedule – spreading across February, April and May – allows beginners to build up their fitness and confidence levels progressively over a four-month period until they feel at ease to complete the final sprint Triathlon.
The event recorded its largest growth in 2011 among the youth and kids categories, and is expected to achieve a total participation rate of over 6,000 in 2012 partly due to a broader grass-root marketing campaign supported by Clear Channel’s island-wide bus stop panels. Over recent years the event has seen strong family participation with families of four or five becoming a common sight. There is also a corporate challenge where company employees can either take part individually or as a relay team.
Registration for the New Moon Khcycle MetaSprint Series is now open. Early Bird rates are available until 12 October 2011. Participants who register for the three-race package will be entitled to a 15 percent discount.
